Test Results, Investigations & Laboratory Specimens

Below is an approximate guide to how long results can take to come through.

Test Results

Wherever possible, please telephone for test results after 2pm as this is the period when the telephone lines and administrative staff are least busy and so best able to help.

 

General Information about Test Results

In the majority of cases the results will be within Normal or expected limits and in these circumstances your Doctor may ask the Receptionist to inform you that the result in normal when you enquire.

Should the Doctor need to see you the Receptionist will book an appointment in accordance with the Doctors instructions. Usually the first available routine appointment is offered but in cases of urgency a same day or next day appointment is arranged.

For a variety of reasons a test may need to be repeated or medication may be prescribed and often the Practice Nurse will speak to you about this.

The results of tests carried out during hospital visits are not normally sent to the practice.

 

Results of Smear Tests

Normal smears are recalled every 3 years or if you have abnormal smears it may be more frequently. Sometimes a smear is inadequate you will be called by the surgery to have it repeated. If there is any problems with your smear that needs referral to a Gynaecologist the surgery will contact you to see a doctor in the surgery. Smear results can take a few weeks to come back from the Cytology Department, you should also receive a copy of the result in the post.

 

Confidentiality

Results for patients over 16yrs can only be given to the patient. However, results can be given to someone other than the patient if previously arranged with Doctor.

As per our practice policy to ensure patient confidentiality, the staff WILL NOT disclosed any details of the test but will advise you of any action that needs to be taken.

 

Investigations

Please book via Reception on 01793 523176 any tests you are to have with the Practice Nurse or Phlebotomist.

Reception staff will advise who you will need to see. This may include blood tests, Blood Pressure monitoring, cervical smears and ECG’s.

 

Laboratory Specimens

Specimens should be handed in as early in the day as possible. Please ensure your name and date of birth are on the container.
